Platelet-Rich Plasma

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)?

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. During this appointment, a small amount of the patient’s blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood components.

Platelets are rich in growth factors that support the body’s natural healing and repair process. Once prepared, the PRP can be injected into targeted areas or applied to the skin depending on the treatment plan.

PRP is commonly used to help improve skin texture, tone, fine lines, volume loss, under-eye concerns, acne scarring, hair thinning, and overall skin rejuvenation. Because PRP comes from your own body, it is considered a natural regenerative treatment.

Who is it For?

PRP may be a good option for clients who want a more natural approach to rejuvenation and healing. It can be used for a wide range of ages, typically from the 20s through the 70s, depending on skin condition, goals, and overall health.

In younger clients, PRP may be used to support collagen production, improve acne scarring, soften early fine lines, and brighten overall complexion.

In clients in their 30s, 40s, and beyond, PRP can help address changes related to aging, such as dullness, crepey skin, fine lines, mild volume loss, thinning skin, and loss of firmness.

PRP may also be recommended for clients who are not quite ready for filler, want to enhance other treatments, or prefer a treatment that uses their own natural growth factors.

PRP may not be appropriate for everyone, including clients with certain blood disorders, active infections, some autoimmune conditions, certain cancers, or those taking medications that interfere with clotting or healing. A provider will review your health history before treatment.

Pre-Treatment Instructions:

  1. Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your appointment. Being well hydrated can make the blood draw easier and may improve the quality of the PRP sample.
  2. Eat a light, healthy meal before your appointment unless otherwise instructed.
  3. If you have a history of bruising, it is recommended to discontinue fish oils, vitamin E, and other non-essential supplements that may increase bruising for approximately 7–10 days prior to treatment, unless directed otherwise by your medical provider.
  4. Avoid alcohol for 24–48 hours before treatment, as it may increase the chance of bruising or swelling.
  5. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, or naproxen for several days before treatment if possible, unless medically necessary. These medications may interfere with the natural inflammatory healing response that PRP is designed to stimulate.
  6. If you take aspirin, blood thinners, or prescription medications, do not stop them unless instructed by your prescribing provider.
  7. Before getting started, we may apply a topical anesthetic to reduce discomfort, depending on the area being treated. This is typically done before your treatment begins.
  8. Come to your appointment with clean skin and avoid applying heavy makeup, lotions, or active skincare products to the treatment area.

Post-Treatment Care:

  1. You may experience redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, or a mild sunburn-like sensation in the treated area. This is normal and usually improves over the next several days.
  2. Avoid washing the treated area for at least 6–12 hours after treatment unless otherwise instructed.
  3. Use a gentle cleanser when you first cleanse the area. Avoid exfoliants, scrubs, retinoids, acids, vitamin C, or other active skincare products for several days after treatment.
  4. Your skin may be more sensitive to the sun after treatment, so sunscreen is a must. Use a gentle, broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid direct sun exposure.
  5. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and excessive heat for 24–48 hours after treatment.
  6. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after treatment, as it may increase swelling or bruising.
  7. Do not pick, rub, or massage the treated area unless instructed by your provider.
  8. Avoid makeup for the remainder of the day if PRP was used on the face or applied topically. If needed, mineral makeup may typically be used the following day.
  9. If PRP was injected, avoid putting pressure on the treated area for the first 24 hours.
  10. If PRP was used for hair restoration, avoid washing your hair for the remainder of the day and avoid harsh hair products, coloring, or chemical treatments for several days unless otherwise directed.
  11. Make sure to schedule your follow-up treatment as recommended. PRP is often performed as a series for best results.
What to Expect:

-You may have mild redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising, itching, tightness, or flaking for 24–72 hours after treatment. Typically, the first 24–48 hours are the most noticeable.

-Mild bruising can occur, especially when PRP is injected into delicate areas such as under the eyes or around the mouth.

-Some clients notice a temporary glow or improvement within the first few days, but deeper collagen and tissue-supporting benefits develop gradually over time.

-PRP works by stimulating your body’s natural repair process, so results are not immediate like traditional filler. Improvements usually build over several weeks and may continue to improve for a few months.

-For skin rejuvenation, clients may notice smoother texture, brighter tone, softer fine lines, and healthier-looking skin.

-For under-eye treatment, PRP may help improve the appearance of crepey texture, dullness, and hollow or tired-looking skin over time.

-For hair restoration, results are gradual. Shedding may improve first, followed by thicker-looking hair and improved density over several months. A series of treatments is usually recommended.

-Because PRP uses your own blood-derived growth factors, results vary from person to person based on age, health, lifestyle, skin condition, and treatment goals.

-Most clients require a series of treatments for best results, often spaced several weeks apart. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to help preserve results.
