Sclerotherapy All you need to know.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a popular treatment for eliminating spider veins (superficial telangiectasias). During the procedure, a sclerosing solution is injected into the veins, which helps improve their appearance. Most patients achieve clear or significantly improved results. However, sclerotherapy may not be effective for everyone, and approximately 10% of patients experience poor to fair results, meaning the veins may not disappear entirely after multiple treatments.
Please note: Our clinic specializes in treating spider veins only. We do not treat large varicose veins.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments varies depending on the severity and extent of the spider veins. On average, patients need four treatments, but this can range from one to six or more. Individual veins typically require one to three treatments.
What are the most common side effects?
Some of the most common side effects include:
- Transient hyperpigmentation: About 30% of patients may notice temporary brown streaks or discoloration. Veins may appear darker immediately after the procedure. In rare cases, discoloration may last a year or more.
- Sloughing: A small ulceration at the injection site occurs in less than 5% of patients and may result in a permanent scar.
- Neovascularization: Temporary development of new tiny blood vessels near the treatment area.
- Allergic reactions: Rare but possible, especially in patients with a history of allergies.
- Pain: Moderate to severe pain or bruising can occur near injection sites. Tenderness along the vein may last 1 to 7 days.
- Itching: Mild itching may occur along the vein route, usually lasting 1 to 2 days.
Other possible side effects include a burning sensation during injection, temporary swelling, wheals (similar to hives), and very rare complications like wound infection, poor healing, scarring, or phlebitis (vein inflammation). Phlebitis can carry risks such as pulmonary embolism or post-phlebitis syndrome.
What are the potential risks of not treating spider veins?
Spider veins themselves are usually cosmetic and do not pose significant health risks. However, if left untreated, they may worsen over time or cause discomfort in some cases.
Are there alternative treatments for spider veins?
Other cosmetic treatments, such as laser therapy, are sometimes used to treat spider veins. While effective for certain patients, each method comes with its own set of risks and outcomes. Our clinic focuses on sclerotherapy as a safe and effective option for treating spider veins.
Post-Care Instructions

- Wear compression stockings for a minimum of 72 hours.
- Avoid shaving or applying lotions to the treated area during this time.
- Avoid all sun exposure for at least three weeks to reduce the risk of complications.
